These magnetic couplings have been under design for quite some time.
Magnetic coupling is great but with a normal magnetic coupling you have to make sure you get the poles correct, ie a North has to go with a South pole on a magnet other wise they will not link. This could happen if you rotate a loco. We have devised the omni MagNEM to solve this. You do not need to worry about which direction the magnetic couplings are. Also we have made them in several sizes and in different thicknesses to combat the variety of coupling pockets and stock types.
We are offering a narrow version that pivots in the pocket to allow stock to negotiate R2 curves and not derail. Please measure carefully to ensure you get the correct length for your stock as there are many variations of pocket positioning,the long coupling will allow most stock to go round radius 2. Shorter couplings will give closer coupling but require greater radius curves. We have used a variety of combinations to get even the Bachmann Brake down crane to negotiate R2 curved without derailment!
Standard vs Narrow
We have found the standard width of the pocket couplings is fine for a lot of locos and rollingstock. However, certain lighter wagons and those with fixed non pivoting pockets can derail on curves due to the inability to pivot. We have solved this with the NARROW version of the MagNEMS that are half the width of a standard coupling, still fit in a standard pocket and therefore can pivot left and right. We have used these on our own fixed pocket stock and there have been no derailments as a result!
Key Information, please read before ordering:
- Length measured from end of magnet to tip of socket, ie total length of coupling
- Long OO MagNEMs are the same length as a normal tension lock or hook coupling as factory fitted on most locos and stock
- Mediums give a close couple on most stock whilst allowing negotiation of all but the tighter radius curves
- Short give buffer to buffer coupling and will require combination with longer couplings to negotiate all but the shallowest of curves
